A little history of pasta
In the common sense, pasta was introduced to Europe during Marco Polo's return from China. The reality is quite different....
- The first pasta came from Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq and Syria), where wheat was first cultivated 8,000 years ago.
The shape of the pasta was “risnatu” scraped pasta which resembles Italian pasta grattugiata or even Alsatian Spaetzles - The Greeks, Romans and Arabs then spread pasta throughout the world.
Pasta in Europe therefore dates back well before Marco Polo's trip to China in the 13th century. - Lasagna was the first format of pasta in the form of a dish called “laganon”, a word which means “piece of dough cut into strips”
The nomadic populations of the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa invented dried pasta and the drying of pasta was introduced to Palermo in Sicily between the 9th and 11th centuries and then spread to Italy.
